5 Mind Blowing Facts about Real Estate Closing Gifts

Most Agents think they have closing gifts all figured out. Have you ever stopped to wonder if there was anything that would make a closing gift from you more memorable? Here are 5 facts about closing gifts that can help you get a return on your investment and make you look great!

1. A useless gift is…just that

The amount of use is a major detail of all closing gifts. Nothing is worse than having your clients store your gift or even worse, toss it or add it to the donation pile. Think about a closing gift that your clients will use every day, or something they will see on a daily basis. Focus on timeless gifts like cutting boards or rolling pins instead of the latest trends. This will ensure that your clients always have you on their mind when they use their closing gift.

2. Long term closing gift goals

I’m never one to turn down a gift basket with bread and cheese in it, but your new homeowners are likely to forget about that shortly after the food is gone. Shelf life is critical! Spending $30 on a fruit basket is in essence just watching your money rot.

Gary Keller, co-founder of Keller Williams Realty, says there are two things your gift must do: It must have shelf life and be useful. Give a gift that is used daily and will last forever.

3. Being Cheap shows

You don’t have to spend a fortune to give a nice closing gift. But, if you cheap out on your clients, they’ll know. Most closing costs end up over $4,000 throughout the United States. Spending $20 on a bargain-basement closing gift is something that Dwight Schrute would do. Don't be Dwight.

In reality, your closing gifts aren't gifts at all. They are your marketing. If you could spend $50 to make a lasting impression on someone and make them 42% more likely to give you a referral, would you? Of course you would, you're not stupid. So don't be cheap.

4. It’s up to you

Use your closing gifts as a client retention tool and then don’t stop. Keep in touch with your clients. Many realtors contact past clients every few months to check in on the house, ask about kids and see if there is anything they can do or help with. According to the National Association of Realtors, 88% of buyers say they would use their Realtor again, but in reality only about 19% actually work with the same agent or recommend them to others. That means that you will never hear from most of your clients after closing. With over 40% of new clients coming from referrals, you're missing a huge opportunity for more sales. Don't let this opportunity sail by.

5. Logo = Savings

Put your logo on your closing gift. Although some say it might lose a little class, a gift with a logo is sure to keep your name in mind with your clients. Be sure not to go over the top with the branding. A very subtle or small logo will serve its purpose. And the big plus, when your gift has your logo, it becomes 100-percent tax deductible as advertising.
